The benefits of taking an extended time to fully relax and allow both mind and body the opportunity to recreate healthy function is vital for a long and prosperous life. This means divorcing yourself from your cares and worries. Can you leave your work and worries long enough to allow yourself to recover?
To make a comparison, it’s important to frequently defragment your computer, as it will eventually slow down and fail to work properly when this type of maintenance is ignored. Defragmenting the computer allows it to regain it’s speed and proper function. When we deprive ourselves of healthy down-time, where we are continue to push ourselves to achieve, the restoration of healthy function is put off and productivity is negatively impacted.
Large Companies that understand this principle encourage their employees to get the kind of rest, relaxation, and recreation which restores their vitality and productivity. Some of these companies have full time facilities which provide an outlet for physical and mental health. These large companies have found that supporting these areas where many experience burnout saves on sick time and increases productivity.
Exercise, provided it’s within a healthy range, is actually healing and the recreation part of it has restorative action. We rest better when we have exerted properly. Many who lead a sedentary life find that they don’t sleep well, which impairs overall health. This is a form of recreation which is vital to maintaining optimal health. A good workout shouldn't wear you out, but should energize you.
Some of us fail to understand that a vacation should be a time of relaxation, where we can shift from the daily fight or flight routine to the rebuild, recreate mode. Back when I was in school, I carried two jobs on the side to work on removing the debt of education. When I had time off, (which was seldom), I found myself pushing extra hard to make sure I had fun. Unfortunately this didn’t qualify as complete relaxation and re-creation.
As I prepare for one such vacation, I have to remember what it’s all about, and not try to squeeze in every activity to the point I return to practice exhausted. I will seriously try to get the kind of re-creation that will facilitate my skills in restoring patients who need me.
With Labor day upon us, remember, it’s not about more labor, but a rest from your labor. I will return ready to handle all your health needs, and be ready to hit the deck running. I anticipate a boatload of sports physicals when I return.
There will be no Dr John’s corner next Thursday as I won’t be close to my computer.
Although I won’t be available for a week, Cheryle will be in the office to make appointments and provide your supplements. Please make sure I’m busy when I return. I’ll be tuned up and ready to make sure you all have the best lives possible. In the meantime, enjoy your Labor Day, and may it be a day of restoration and re-creation.
Actually, I've already been on vacation and am back to taking care of my beloved patients.
