When I see centurions running marathons it encourages me to set new goals apart from the number of candles on my birthday cake. Taking the easy route of sitting on the couch watching the news like a zombie doesn’t excite me. I want to be the one making the news.
Besides continuing to pursue activity, maintaining the proper fuel to run the show is crucial. Recently, something was brought to my attention and spurred the inspiration for this week’s newsletter.
How often we see where the loss of teeth due to poor diet or poor oral hygiene has lead to inability to properly chew our food. Because of this, the choice of foods are often a long way from nourishing.
Dr Weston Price stated that arthritis is a cooked food disease. In his many studies, subjects fed a strictly cooked food diet suffered degeneration of bone and cartilage. When diets consisted of at least half the volume being raw, the degenerative actions were greatly curtailed.
Besides fiber, missing nutrients among many seniors included a lack of enzymes. We often think of enzymes strictly for the digestion of our food. What’s often missed is the fact much of the enzymes consumed in our food have a profound effect on our cardiovascular system.
Our pancreas is responsible not only for the production of insulin, but to provide enzymes for digestion. When our diets lack enzymes found in raw foods, our pancreas can become more burdened, having to work overtime. When I deal with patients suffering arterial blockage, I often dispense a product rich in specific enzymes, taken away from food, which are then delivered into the cardiovascular system, digesting the plaques which are potentially exposing them to stroke or heart attack.
For this very reason, consuming enzyme rich raw foods can have a dramatic benefit if we really want to live a long and healthy life. When I hear seniors say they can’t chew these foods, the next step is to begin to use smoothies created with a juicer or a good blender on a daily basis. I enjoy starting my day with a smoothie consisting of a wide variety of fresh raw vegetables.
This is something to incorporate into a daily routine. While my wife was in Bali recently, because it wasn’t safe to drink the water, she lived on fresh juices and loved it. When she got home, out came our juicer and besides the smoothies, we’re now getting additional fresh juices.
In these smoothies we add the Standard Process Complete powder with additional amino acids along with a wide variety of nutrition to make sure we cover all the bases. Because we have our own chickens and know the quality of our eggs, we also add a raw egg in the smoothie. By the way, my wife didn’t know I’d added the egg until she commented on how long she lasted on the smoothie.
These raw foods are critical to improve and preserve life. Besides the raw foods, in the winter time it’s important to get more warmth into the body, so steaming vegetables is also important for those with difficulty chewing. Adding this to your daily regime can be very beneficial.
Now that I’ve covered the fuel we require to remain strong and healthy, how about what’s needed to improve longevity with our activities. I know that getting on that treadmill requires a great deal of desire. A body in motion tends to stay in motion, but a body at rest resists going into motion.
It’s much easier to hit the snooze alarm and snuggle for that half hour instead of hauling that stubborn body out of bed to exercise. I can attest to that for sure. I have to make up my mind to get up and get going.
A teacher I love to listen to made the comment that he hated getting on the treadmill until one day he began to confess that he loved it. That’s when he began to look forward to getting in his exercise. He’s 85 and will turn 86 this December and he’s in the best shape of his life. I know that if it came to a push-up contest with him I’d loose. He is also very disciplined with his diet.
If we all can devote our lives to better diets and improved exercise, 2023 can be a banner year for all of us. Attitude is critical in this. We all have an opportunity to pursue healthy habits. It all begins between our ears. Are you willing to go the extra mile and pursue health? I love when people say that I haven’t aged. I want to be able to pursue the activities of my youth and not look at the number of candles on the cake and make my decisions about what I’m capable of on not from that. Lets live life to it’s fullest and make 2023 our best year ever.
