With what we can remember concerning that time, the loss of jobs, finances, and especially discouragement, there has to be something which helps to get us through the rough spots in life.
Regardless of whatever stressful situation we face in life, what we’ve invested toward our health is foundational. This includes what we continue to do. Our daily activities are critical when it comes to, not only survival, but growth and strength.
After my brother copied off family movies of our growing up, I saw many of the moments which have shaped and molded my life and the life of my eight siblings. It’s encouraging to see that all nine of us are healthy, successful, and happy. In seeing how we were raised, the nutritious food, love and acceptance, and good work ethics, it’s easy to understand how we all managed to turn out this way.
In one segment of the DVD I saw where Governor Dan Evans and his kids would join us for opening day of fishing season on our dock. Upon checking to see how his life has gone, it’s awesome to note he’s 96 and still going strong.
Upon looking at his life’s achievements, the list is unending. Even in his eighties he was still working in his consulting firm. This is a huge component of longevity. I wish I could have gotten to know him more than just fishing with him as a kid. Quite obviously he’s been a man of little doubt. When he had put his mind to something he would eventually overcome any and all obstacles in his way. This probably came from his time as an Eagle Scout.
I’ve witnessed where people lose many areas of function as they retire and quit being productive. I’m often asked if I’m planning on retiring any time soon. After seeing so many patients who, in a way, were put out to pasture eventually begin to experience either cognitive or physical decline and sometimes both, I don’t really want any part of that.
Although there are many causative elements proposed to explain the foundation of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, the one I’ve seen most common is that of feeling of being no value anymore. I even saw this to begin to show on my own father. Productive activity, both mental and physical are crucial when it comes to longevity.
Even in the worst of times, those who are mentally and physically fit, possessing a positive outlook always seem to rise to the top. I’ve seen this to be the case time and time again. If you think you can’t, you can’t. Life isn’t always fair and no one ever promised that it would be easy.
Changing your lifestyle to encourage better health isn’t something which is easy, and often times I encourage baby steps to make that happen. Always look to see what your largest obstacle is and begin there. When you’ve overcome and completed that, go on to the next one.
My brother who’s a business consultant has his clients begin by making a list of the most needed changes in their establishment with the biggest or most important as number one. You can’t fix what you don’t know is broken. When you can identify the problem, it’s easier to figure out how to correct it.
If your diet is the primary obstacle to your health, that needs to be addressed first. When this is known, find out what sabotages you. These things need to be removed from your house so they won’t act as a stumbling block while you overcome this obstacle before moving on to the next.
Food and diet have been man’s undoing ever since Adam and Eve in the garden. It seems to me that whoever is capable of maintaining diligence in what and how they eat will be capable of overcoming any and all challenges in every area of their life.
With each victory you gain greater confidence in taking on and overcoming the next challenge on your list. At the top of your list you need to outline what your ultimate goal should look like. If it’s greater vitality and endurance, identify the thieves that have been at work, stealing your energy and creating a passive response. We all have been created for greatness. Who were you created to be?
