Insulin can be over secreted with much of the glucose in blood bound and drawn into the cells of the body. When this exceeds dietary serum glucose levels, we can see blood sugar plummet and see a hypoglycemic situation resulting.
Glucagon, in hypoglycemic situations is released by the delta cells of the pancreas to signal the body to convert fat stores into glucose. This is intended to maintain normal blood glucose levels, and can assist in weight loss. If the body responds with greater insulin secretion, this becomes a problem. Insulin in the bloodstream inhibits the release of glucagon, thus defeating any hopes of burning fat.
When blood sugar drops, the adrenal glands release epinephrine, norepinephrine, and cortisol to stimulate conversion of glycogen and amino acid reserves into glucose. Because epinephrine and cortisol linger in the blood stream longer than the previous surge, blood sugar remains elevated, thus calling on the pancreas to compensate with additional insulin. And around we go on the roller coaster.
Prolonged elevations of insulin can initiate calcification around the cells. Excess tissue calcium hardens cell membranes, decreasing membrane permeability, inhibiting normal metabolism. This can block hormone transfer into the cells. Insulin resistance is where the body no longer can utilize it’s own insulin anymore. This can also result in many stubborn health issues. The ability to transport and utilize thyroid hormone can be negatively impacted by chronic insulin elevation.
Elevations of both insulin and cortisol result in cardiovascular damage, hypertension, obesity, diabetes, hormonal imbalances, emotional imbalance, and sleep apnea, just to mention a few. Your body’s ability to utilize dietary glucose is critical to every aspect of life.
Once we see evidence of insulin resistance, it’s important to take charge of your health and lifestyle. Dietary diligence is first and foremost. To stop the roller coaster and get off entails making wise choices in your diet. Avoiding foods which spike insulin response is your best medicine.
High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) is one of the worst offenders when it comes to spiking insulin response. This means all soda pop must be eliminated from the diet. Even those so called healthy fruit juices are often loaded with the stuff. Many low glycemic sweeteners like agave are extremely high in fructose. What allows them to be classified as low glycemic is because they are low in glucose. Glucose will raise insulin, but not as aggressively as fructose.
This brings us to the issue of fruit. Yes, fruit has fructose in it, but not to the level seen in refined foods. As long as fruit intake is kept at a moderate level, the fiber and additional constituents in the whole fruit will temper insulin response.
The reason diabetics are often told to avoid excess fat is due to the fact fats slow the release of insulin from the pancreas. Type ll diabetics are told this because they already are suffering issues of insulin not being effective enough to lower blood sugar. The reason the ketogenic diet works so well at weight loss is because it reduces excess insulin, which defeats any attempt at burning fats.
When we see insulin resistance, fasting glucose and fasting insulin are both elevated. Triglycerides begin to increase to levels greater than half that of cholesterol as cells become more resistant to insulin’s ability to transfer nutrition into the cell for metabolism.
Since your adrenal glands are recruited to maintain stable blood sugar, we see where their other functions involving mineral and fluid balance are impacted when chronically called on to balance blood sugar. This can result in dysregulation of critical minerals like potassium, sodium, and chlorides. When these minerals are not regulated properly, we see altered fluid balance. This is when many are placed on diuretics to reduce blood pressure.
All of this is preventable if people would just pay attention to the food they eat, and avoid consuming the junk provided by the food manufactures. It’s been said that man never made a food. We manipulate foods to make them taste good and to make them sell. To the degree we manipulate our foods is the degree to which we manipulate our health.
This holiday season, give yourself the best gift ever. That’s the gift of good health. Adam’s temptation was over food and he failed. Jesus was tempted in the same way and passed the test. Can you pass the test? One of the greatest examples of discipline is in our diet.
