Even in the face of all this, the ability to stay calm and trust is a valuable commodity. We don’t have to compound the issues by creating internal toxicity with our thoughts and emotions. The best way to avoid stress is to be proactive. Get in touch with your legislators and demand they protect our constitutional rights and stop destroying our economy.
As our thoughts go, they influence the part of our brain known as the hypothalamus. This is the boss of our endocrine system (hormones), and our autonomic nervous system. This is the control center of our body which automatically impacts our system without conscious thought.
When stressed or fearful, the hypothalamus signals the pituitary to release adrenocorticotropic hormone. This initiates the release of Cortisol from the adrenal glands.
Under normal short term conditions, this can act as protection, as it will stimulate immunity and increase blood sugar levels to address the challenge at hand. Unfortunately, if enacted for prolonged periods, we see damage.
Chronically elevated cortisol leads to weight gain from the increased blood sugar levels without metabolizing it. Over time this can lead to insulin resistance and type two diabetes. Those with chronically elevated triglycerides without a history of elevated carbohydrate intake could be the victim of chronic stress induced cortisol elevation.
Another major tissue target of elevated cortisol is a weakening of the immune system as it works overtime to fight an unknown enemy. Because of this, we can see immunodeficiencies. Here is where even adding vitamin C, zinc, vitamin D and others can really become insufficient. Getting the stress hormones reduced is the most important treatment.
When cortisol is elevated, we see thinning of the mucosal membranes of the gut, predisposing to what’s commonly known as leaky gut syndrome. In this condition partially digested proteins are allowed to pass through he mucosal wall into the blood stream. When this happens, the body rallies the immune response to create antibodies against the foreign protein, leading to food allergies.
The chronic elevation of sugars in the system caused by elevated cortisol leads to inflammatory conditions on the lining of the vascular system. When this happens, the liver begins to produce low density lipoproteins to coat the vascular walls. This is the plaque the AMA and pharmaceutical machine has tried to fight by using the damaging statin drugs. Here is where their attempts to quiet the body’s response to stress actually sets up greater damage, while ignoring the cause.
Quieting the release of cortisol is best addressed by reducing stress. The sympathetic nervous system is that part of the autonomic nervous system called the fight or flight nervous system. When we’re low in the mineral potassium, it’s like driving a car without brakes. Often times we’ll see that this is an area where cortisol is increased as the system is literally racing.
Use of what’s known as sympathomimetic substances (that which mimics the sympathetic nervous system) trigger adrenal overdrive, draining potassium out of the system. One example of this is the over use of caffeine. We know that excessive consumption of this over time can result in greater inflammation as well as elevated blood pressure. Drops in potassium can result in rapid heart rate, nervousness, headaches, and cardiac arrest.
I’ll never forget the time on the dance floor when one of the dance students dropped over from her heart stopping. Two of us began CPR and continued till the paramedics got there and shocked her five times before getting her heart going again. She had been on some kind of diet which dropped her potassium so low the heart couldn’t pump.
So, in this season of challenges, both physically and emotionally, how should we proceed to maintain optimal health? My first advices is to establish a relationship with the Lord who dearly loves you. This can help you to not stress out. There’s something extremely comforting in knowing you’re loved and cared for. If you’ve never done this, it’s really easy. Just ask Jesus to come into your heart and take your life and do something with it. He won’t resist your request.
Next, turn off the news!! Become active in your community in whatever capacity you can. Being proactive takes away lots of the stress of the unknown. Our country has come to the condition it’s in due to passivity. It may be late, but we all need to take part in restoring our country. Sitting back and complaining accomplishes nothing except to increase cortisol levels.
