I’ve just returned from a seven state 33 hundred mile motorcycle tour with the Chariots of Light motorcycle ministry. Other than Colorado, the other six states I rode solo. During this time I learned a very valuable lesson. That lesson is, always take inventory of your vehicle before leaving. At 75 miles an hour just outside of Rawlins, Wyoming, I blew out a rear tire.
Stranded on the side of the highway in the middle of nowhere, I was blessed that one of my patients, waiting for me to get to Cheyenne for dinner, contacted a couple in the CMA (Christian Motorcycle Association), who came to my rescue. These people truly embrace what it means to live the life of a Christian.
After putting me up and feeding me, they got me the next 200 miles to Fort Collins where I could get a new tire on my bike.
So, you ask, what does this have to do with Dr John’s corner this week? Equipment failure can happen suddenly and unexpectedly with our bodies if we fail to heed the warning signs. If I’d noticed the missing wear bars on my rear tire before leaving, I could have missed a costly lesson.
Just as with our vehicles, our bodies need maintenance as well as periodic examination to insure we don’t need intervention by emergency medicine. Had I done with my motorcycle what I insist we do with our bodies, that $500 rear tire could have only cost me $200 doing it here at home. Preventative medicine isn’t near as expensive as waiting till you’re broken and need assistance by crisis based doctors.
Annual blood profiles along with getting tested on the heart sound recorder may reveal potential threats to your health regardless of how good you may feel at the time. It’s important to evaluate your health regularly and make adjustments as needed. The use of the blood sugar test known as hemoglobin-A1C can reveal increasing blood sugar levels early on, signaling potential future diabetic complications. It’s far easier to reverse this kind of problem early rather than waiting till you have an encounter with diabetes.
Although cholesterol levels are improperly addressed in many instances, finding a level that’s too low can be a red flag signaling poor liver function. You may not be dealing with symptoms at the time, but this can lead to some serious issues with nerve and brain function as well as difficulty managing healthy hormone levels.
If you find there’s something amiss through proper testing, treating it holistically early on, can save you the heartache of hospitalization and surgeries down the road. Drugs, drug therapies, and surgery should only be last ditch alternatives when you’ve waited too long to take care of foundational problems. Don’t wait till it’s too late to regenerate your system.
Symptoms like chronic joint pain should let you know there’s potential degenerative changes taking place. Continuing on with pain relievers and failing to address the cause can lead to requiring joint replacement surgeries. I have a family member who will attest to this not being a viable alternative. This person suffers more after surgery than before.
When dealing with chronic joint issues, it may imply too many inflammatory foods in the diet. This is where evaluating your dietary intake as well as your body’s elimination can shed light on what to change so the healing ability of your body can step up and get the job done. Ignoring the signals only increases the damage potentials.
Symptoms are your friend, not your enemy. Reading these warning signs can help you avoid costly issues concerning your health and longevity. If you simply cover the symptom with a drug, the problem isn’t gone, just masked.
When communicating with your health care provider, be sure and discuss all potential problems so we can effectively be the detectives we’re trained to be. Mainstream medical doctors have wonderful diagnostic tools. Don’t hesitate to share any information gleaned from their diagnostics with your holistic practitioner so proper therapy can be initiated.
