With references to “fear not” throughout your Bible, do you really think it’s appropriate to harbor such emotions? Don’t you think fear could be considered a sinful act, since “fear not” is a command and not just a good suggestion?
Although our bodies have the ability to dump adrenaline into the system for emergencies, running on it is quite like driving your car red lined all the time. You can rev the engine up into the red line, but maintaining that will eventually blow up your engine. Fear initiates an increase in adrenalin output.
The very thought of watching horror shows is repulsive to me as I really don’t need to foster fear in my system. Scaring children isn’t a healthy approach to raising well adjusted adults.
We’ve entered into a time in our country where I’ve seen families fighting with one another over stupid things like personal opinions. Fear has entered into the picture from such things as Facebook, Twitter, television ads, and all other forms of media. Believe it or not, this is having a profound effect on the health of our nation.
Nineteen years ago I rode my motorcycle to Montana to take part in a motorcycle ministry event with Dr Jerry Savelle and Chariots of Light. I’d never met him or any of the others there, but fell in love with all of them. This was toward the end of August 2001, and everywhere Dr Savelle ministered, he was focused on just one major scripture.
In every town, he shared Isaiah 54;14 and 15, which reads like this; “In righteousness shalt thou be established: thou shalt be far from oppression; for thou shalt not fear: and from terror; for it shall not come near thee. Behold, they shall surely gather together, but not by me: whosoever shall gather together against thee shall fall for thy sake.”
During that time he was moved to minister against terrorism. I don’t believe it was a coincidence that it was just a couple weeks before September 11, 2001. The message reveals that we need to establish ourselves in right standing with God. When we think about being established in something, we see where we need to be fixed, rooted, unmovable, and fully identified with it. When I consider who I am, I’m fully persuaded that I’m a husband and father. Also that I am a physician. These are identifying aspects of who I am, and you can’t convince me otherwise.
When we’re solidly fixed on being in right standing with God, we have to look past anything we may have ever done, and focus on what Jesus did. When the State confirmed my license to practice medicine, I can fully rest in knowing I’m accepted by the governing bodies that license physicians. I may not wake up feeling like a doctor, but that’s feelings and not the truth. When we receive the sacrifice Jesus made for us and ask Him to live in us, we’re not the same person we were.
I love what the rest of Isaiah 54 says in verse 17, that NO WEAPON formed against us shall prosper. You may feel that the world is crashing down around you like the twin towers, but fear not, get your faith up and rejoice that through Christ you are more than an overcomer.
Fear is actually believing something or someone more than God. You’ve probable heard the acronym of Fear standing for false evidence appearing real. Most things people worry about never happen, and instead of fearing something, get proactive and do something about it. Fear paralyzes. It causes us to become immobile and ineffective. Just like the deer in the headlights being frozen in the road and eventually ending up on your grill.
Another aspect of what’s in that passage, He talks about oppression. In Acts 10:38, it says; “How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him. In this passage, we see oppression is associated with disease.
Fear sets the stage for oppression, which, in this instance is synonymous with disease. Fear filled people are far more susceptible to disease states. In the second chapter of Job, he states that the thing he greatly feared had come upon him. Fear opens the door to every kind of difficulty you may encounter.
Fear is actually faith going in reverse. Fear is more faith in the enemy’s ability to harm you than in God’s ability to protect and provide for you. So, who are you listening to? Faith comes by hearing God’s word. Fear comes by hearing the words of the world.
