To obtain medicinal levels of turmeric, either massive amounts are required, or the use of proper combining with other elements is needed to exert its full medicinal benefits. Usually greater amounts are required as treatment for existing or acute conditions. When used routinely for cooking, many health concerns are prevented, negating the need to take large amounts of the herb.
One challenge when using curcumin is that it’s poorly absorbed across the gut lining. Because of this, many procedures are used to increase uptake of this awesome food. The one most have become familiar with is the addition of black pepper. This does improve the absorption, but Dr Kerry Bone found that combining with fenugreek has created a far superior delivery system.
For those who don’t freely use this herb in their cooking, there’s an easier way to get it on a regular basis, and that is in the form of supplements like Turmeric Forte.
The end stage of viral infections, which can include the flu and even the common cold, often correlates with the onset of increased release of cytokines. These cytokines are part of the clean up effort of the body, but one which must be regulated to avoid the “storm” often referred to in many of the potentially damaging responses of the body’s defenses. Depending on the health of your immune system this response can vary in intensity and severity.
This uncontrolled release of pro-inflammatory cytokines by the body’s immune system involves more than 150 known inflammatory mediators. There are many factors involved in the progression of what begins as a healthy immune response to a state of amplified cytokine production. Again, your underlying health plays a huge part in how you weather the storm.
Cytokines signal immune cells such as T-cells and macrophages to travel to the site of infection when your immune system is fighting a pathogen. This signaling activates those cells, stimulating them to produce more cytokines. This feedback loop is normally managed efficiently in the healthy body, but in some cases the process becomes unregulated, with too many immune cells activating in a single location.
This exaggerated immune response isn’t completely understood but could be attributed to the body encountering a new, highly pathogenic attacker. Cytokine storms have the potential to cause significant damage to various tissues and organs. For example, if a cytokine storm occurs in the lungs, macrophages and fluids may accumulate, eventually obstructing the airways. This is one of the challenges we’ve seen with the COVID19 infections, especially those with compromised immunity.
A study on turmeric looked at how curcumin influences cytokine release and cytokine storm. The article reported on the effects of curcumin on cytokine expression in a mouse model of virus-induced acute respiratory distress syndrome. The authors stated: “Curcumin blocks cytokine release, most importantly the key pro-inflammatory cytokines, interleukin-1, interleukin-6 and tumor necrosis factor-α.” I know we’re not mice, but the study sounds promising for humans as well.
The suppression of cytokine release by curcumin correlates with clinical improvement in experimental models of disease conditions where a cytokine storm plays a significant role in mortality. The research team concluded that curcumin may offer support to those experiencing cytokine storms.
While the authors of the study propose using intravenous curcumin preparations it may be of value to consider the use of oral curcumin preparations which provide increased bioavailability via dual phase polar/non-polar emulsion technology, which has been shown in a human clinical trial to be five to six times better absorbed than phospholipid or oil preparations respectively.
To date, I’m not aware of any research on COVOD19 using Turmeric Forte, but with all the other health benefits of this herbal support, it should be a part of your overall preventative nutritional approach to maintain optimal health regardless of pending global disasters.
