Besides removing unwanted chemistry from your body, they manage your mineral balance. As blood flows into the kidneys, they remove all elements from the blood and then put back what your body needs to function properly.
The instructions your kidneys receive to do so comes from your adrenal glands. These glands maintain your body under stress, and will adjust your mineral status according the stressors you may be undergoing.
Understanding that under stress, it’s common to see your blood pressure elevate. This is orchestrated by your adrenal glands. With elevation of blood pressure, drugs are commonly dispensed which alter adrenal and kidney function.
Most of the time, diuretics are given to draw additional fluids from the blood, reducing the hydraulic pressure, thus lowering blood pressure. In this case, the body’s attempt to deal with stress is thwarted. Now we’re forcing the kidneys to ignore adrenal influence, creating more damage.
There’s always a reason for symptoms in the body. Unfortunately we’re so accustomed to turning off the symptoms instead of changing lifestyle that we invoke more damage to the body when it’s only trying to help us.
When ordering blood profiles, it’s common to get both a blood urea nitrogen and creatinine to see how the kidneys are doing. There’s a term used called a GFR, which means glomerular filtration rate. This is the efficiency of the glomeruli of the kidneys. What’s suggested as normal is anything over 60. It’s preferable to have this number closer to 90. When decreased, it relates to kidney function failing. Extremely low levels suggest an impending need for dialysis.
Any time I see a low GFR, my first thought is, “what’s been injuring the kidneys?” Heavy or long-term use of anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen, naproxen, and higher dose aspirin, can cause chronic kidney disease known as chronic interstitial nephritis. The nephrons are the functional components of the glomeruli.
If you have decreased kidney function, painkillers called NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) and higher dose aspirin could accelerate damage to both your kidneys and your liver. Here is where safer botanical medications should be considered in lieu of the drugs.
Kidney stones are an indication of poor calcium metabolism. Often times, phosphorous deficiency can cause calcium to precipitate out into the kidneys forming stones. This is just one place we can see calcium precipitating out, where is shouldn’t be. The gallbladder, joints, the lens of the eye, and tartar on the teeth can be symptoms of poor calcium metabolism.
Besides phosphorous, a deficiency of the poly-unsaturated fats can prevent calcium from entering the appropriate tissues, causing elevated serum calcium, resulting in high blood pressure and kidney stones. Diets lacking in these fats, and poor liver/gallbladder function can be an underlying cause of these issues.
Keeping your kidneys healthy is critical to support your longevity. Since the minerals your body requires for staying healthy and energetic depend on proper balancing by your kidneys, it makes sense to keep them strong and functioning at their optimum. Maintaining proper hydration is critical. Drinking water is a must. It amazes me how many people avoid water and only drink coffee, energy drinks, soda pop, tea, and alcohol.
Foods that strengthen the kidneys includes beans. The shape of the bean resembles the kidney and is a plant signature. Concerning the shape of the kidneys, they resemble the ears as well. It’s not uncommon to see hearing issues connected to kidney issues. Ringing ears and high blood pressure are common. Consider improving kidney function and see if this clear it up.
Digestive issues where proteins are poorly utilized can increase the amino acid arginine in the blood and overload the kidneys. Many times where I see kidney damage, the use of the enzyme arginase can take stress off the kidneys while using additional nutrition to support repair.
Excessive sugar exposure as in diabetes creates inflammation of the kidneys and can ultimately set up kidney failure. Correcting blood chemistry is important in all of these cases.
Fear and shame are the emotions which damage the kidneys.
