Although this is one major function of hormones, it fails to encompass all the aspects of the endocrine system. You see, hormone regulation is the chemical aspect of our internal communication system. We also have an electrical aspect of communication which involves currents running through our nerves. We see evidence of this by the mechanical functioning of the heart and the use of an electrical pace maker when there’s been a failure of the Sino-atrial node to control normal rhythm of the heart.
Although the heart is primarily regulated electrically, the chemical aspect can over-ride basic heart function. This is seen in fright or fear when a major release of adrenalin causes the heart to speed up and beat harder.
So you see, all of our tissues are influenced by both controlling influences. Your endocrine and nerve function are regulated and over ridden by your thought processes and by the regulating aspect of the hypothalamus.
This part of your brain is the watchful eye on your body’s complete chemistry. Sort of like the thermostat in your house that will constantly monitor the internal environment and adjust the temperature according to your desired intent. Damage to this organ affects virtually every cell of you body.
Your thoughts influence this control mechanism just like when you take control of the thermostat in your house. You can set it to keep your house comfortable, hot, or cold, and it will control your heating and air conditioning system accordingly. For this reason, there can be times where the statement, “it’s all in your head” can actually be true. Damage to the thermostat (hypothalamus) can make it difficult to keep the hormones and the nerves where they should be. Closed head injuries have a potential of affecting this organ.
Hormonal control includes your metabolism, energy, blood sugar, height, weight, sleep, temperature, mood, blood pressure, appetite, pulse, body fat content, and I’m sure I’ve left our a few. Because of this, trying to control hormone imbalances without proper internal control is like juggling with a whole kitchen drawer full of knives. It can be kind of scary.
For this reason, working with the foundation of these hormones is critical. As I’ve stated in the past, the core of every hormone and the wrapper of every nerve is cholesterol. Can you see now why so many symptoms arise in people taking statin drugs? Want to upset your hormone balance? Eat a low fat diet or take a cholesterol drug.
Maintaining the endocrine system requires many of the trace minerals like copper, manganese, zinc, and iodine. These minerals are greatly depleted in much of the growing conditions of the large commercial farms. This is why I emphasize organic produce, and that you grow much of your own. Learn how to properly compost to get those minerals back in the soil. Here in the northwest we get a tremendous amount of precipitation that tends to wash much of the mineral content out of our soils.
When you can’t get these minerals in your diet, this is where food based nutritional supplementation can help fill the void and restore appropriate hormone balance. This is why I rely so heavily on products from a reputable food based source like Standard Process.
Besides the benefit of good fats, oils, and minerals, the regulation of hormone levels and clearing of excess is something done by your liver. When estrogen levels in a woman are elevated resulting in unusual swelling and weight gain coupled with emotional issues, check to see if the clearance pathways are being blocked or overloaded. Lack of vitamin B-6 can limit clearance. Since caffeine is cleared through the same pathway as estrogen, if there’s competition with estrogen, this can be a major cause of fibroids and cysts. It’s not uncommon to find that women with heavy periods and fibrocystic breasts consuming excessive coffee.
