Seeing our economy transformed in the midst of a new political climate has many wondering what’s next. Workers with their jobs terminated due to changes in environmental regulations along with potential changes in minimum wage is eating at many. Those who could see their jobs ending as business owners have to tighten their financial belt are concerned with their futures.
Amidst all of this, depression, fear, and anxiety have been running rampant. In an attempt to survive this kind of stress, the use of both legal and illicit drugs has been on the rise. Use of drugs like prozac only serve to reduce how we perceive the noise. Just like a radio which isn’t fully on the desired station, the static is annoying. These drugs don’t do anything to tune in the station, but just turns down the static.
If you turn down the static, the result is your entire life being turned down. These drugs make people into literal zombies. There’s a reduced ability to enjoy life when using them.
Obviously, what we focus on is what influences our thoughts and emotions. Philippians 4:4-9 provides the best answer to dealing with these assaults on our mind and emotions, “Be cheerful with joyous celebration in every season of life. Let your joy overflow! And let gentleness be seen in every relationship, for our Lord is ever near. Don’t be pulled in different directions or worried about a thing. Be saturated in prayer throughout each day, offering your faith-filled requests before God with overflowing gratitude. Tell him every detail of your life, then God’s wonderful peace that transcends human understanding, will guard your heart and mind through Jesus Christ. Keep your thoughts continually fixed on all that is authentic and real, honorable and admirable, beautiful and respectful, pure and holy, merciful and kind. And fasten your thoughts on every glorious work of God, praising him always. Put into practice the example of all that you have heard from me or seen in my life and the God of peace will be with you in all things.”
When it comes to balancing your biochemical status and offsetting the stress components, there are many great herbal supports one can use. Interestingly, hops are very calming. That is one reason many who indulge in beer, (as long as their liver issues don’t create anger and rage) tend to experience a mellowing out. Besides the calming aspect of hops, they are bitters which aid in digestion. The part about bitters is that they are actually an antidepressant.
We all know that chamomile is something that can help with sleep as it helps to calm the sympathetic nervous system. Just the opposite of caffeine. This combined with passion flower, skullcap, and valerian root can provide a potent nerve relaxing formula. Often this combination can assist those who’s sympathetic nervous system is in overdrive so they can fall asleep. We can easily combine these tinctures in the office and custom blend them to individual needs.
Stress dramatically impacts digestion, resulting in reduced production of serotonin in the small intestine. In fact, 95% of your serotonin production occurs here. The more you deal with poor digestion, the more we see instability in the mental and emotional balance. This is another reason bitters can improve mental stability and performance.
As stated in previous newsletter, glyphosate treated plants lack tryptophan which is the foundation of both serotonin and melatonin. This is why these commercially grown plants fail to properly nourish your body and nervous system. When I have those who display amino acid deficiencies I use Protofood from Standard Process. This concentrated amino acid supplement often helps stabilize blood sugar issues seen in those suffering from hypoglycemia.
