Our nation, amidst the prosperity this country has been blessed with, has some of the fattest people on earth. The cause less due to the abundance of food available, but more so due to the nature of the food consumed.
If you look at the highly processed foods we have available in contrast to nations which live from the farm to the table, it’s easy to see where we’ve gone astray. In just the 40 years from 1960 to 2000, statistics revealed that on average, adult men were 25 pounds heavier and women 26 pounds heaver. I guarantee that’s not due to added muscle.
Part of our problem involves abuse of antibiotics. Agriculture has historically used antibiotics to increase calorie intake in livestock to fatten them up. Besides consuming these antibiotics in our food, they’re given far too frequently in cases where more friendly treatment could be employed.
There’s no single cause for overweight and obesity. Multiple factors all play a role. Simply starving oneself and exercising more fails in most cases to create lasting weight loss. Genetics play a role as do drugs and medications.
Dietary preferences, nutrient availability, digestion, endocrine/hormonal imbalances, liver/gallbladder function, blood sugar changes, toxic load, and emotional/psychological disorders in any combination affect body fat content.
Since weight problems are multifaceted, a multifaceted approach must be considered if weight is to be lost and kept off. Your metabolism is how your body burns calories. Set point is what’s been called a resting metabolic rate or basal metabolic rate. This is kind of like the thermostat on your wall. You set it for the desired temperature, and it controls the heating or cooling to maintain the temperature you set it for.
Unfortunately, not knowing how to reset your ‘set point’ can be frustrating. You may try everything in your power to change the metabolic burn, yet the air conditioning comes on. This is where frustration can set in. People who’ve formerly been obese tend to have metabolic rates 3 to 5% slower on average than those who’ve never been obese.
The greatest success comes when selection of foods involves healthy fats, complete proteins, and complex carbohydrates. Cutting out carbohydrates completely isn’t the answer. Stopping all carbs can make it harder to drop the pounds. Cutting out refined carbohydrates is where success is found. These refined carbs are closely linked to obesity, insulin resistance, diabetes, cardiovascular problems, and bone loss.
When I talk about quality complex carbohydrates, which benefit both your health and weight balance, I’m talking about clean, organic fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and beans. These not only contain carbohydrates which are clean burning in your system, but also are a wonderful source of vital nutrients and soluble fiber, which also aids in weight loss. Glucose from these foods provides fuel for the brain. All too often, those on restrictive diets complain of brain fog due to lacking proper glucose for brain nutrition.
Restrictive diets frequently cause loss of muscle mass. Eating high quality protein is critical. Besides protecting muscle mass, eating protein suppresses the release of the hormone ‘Ghrelin’, which is responsible for stimulating hunger. If your goal is to reduce calorie intake, excess Ghrelin will sabotage your efforts.
Natural, un-altered fats are critical for nerves, brain, hormones, cell walls, and blood vessels. They’re also important for weight loss. For years, we’ve been told the only way to lose weight is fat restriction. This is totally wrong! Over the years the insane practice of eating a low fat, no fat diet has made people fatter and fatter. It’s not working folks!
Inadequate fat intake results in increased cravings for sweets and starches. The claim that eating meats and saturated fats leads to weight gain is just totally untrue. The massive amount of data on this subject reveals the fallacy in this practice.
After changing your diet to one which embraces healthy whole foods consisting of good fats, proteins, and complex carbs, if you still fail to lose weight, consider the role of toxins blocking your metabolism. This is where we come in, with supervised detoxification. The program is exceptional at establishing change in all areas of your metabolism. It has the potential of avoiding some serious issues down the road. besides improving your life today.
