Garlic has for generations been used both as a condiment and as a medicine. It has been touted as a means of warding off evil spirits and for clearing the body of parasites. In this way, it can help repeal insects and has even helped to remove unwanted relatives from your house if you eat enough of it.
The primary functional component of garlic is the sulfur based chemical alliin, which when the garlic clove is crushed, is converted into allicin. Besides this component there are peptides, thioglycosides, and trace elements, specifically selenium.

Garlic can reduce bad cholesterol in the body and bring down blood pressure. It can prevent inappropriate platelet aggregation which is a foundation of blood clots.
