Apples are foundational to good health, and even portrayed as the forbidden fruit in the garden of Eden. (Got a bad rap right from the get go). I seriously doubt that it was an apple that caused the fall of man from God’s grace.
This awesome food is packed with nutritional benefits for your entire body. From the wonderful benefits of the malic acid found in apples, to large amounts of natural pectin fiber, which cleanses the intestinal tract. Apples provide a lot of bang for your buck.
Unfortunately this is one of the foods found at the top of the Dirty Dozen list. Use of agri-chemicals on apple crops contributes to added chemical stresses on the
body. For this reason, it’s important to obtain organic apples to avoid overloading your system with toxic chemicals. Although the pectin found in apples is excellent at removing these chemicals, why complicate matters with more environmental toxins.
The reason I picked this topic today is because of the massive apple crop I’ve seen everywhere this year. Trees are breaking under the excess weight of a crop, which is one of the most prolific I’ve seen in years. This holds true for many other fruits as well. The trees are loaded this year. I about cried when one of my favorite winter varieties in the neighbors yard broke under the weight of the apples. I have harvested off that tree every year for many years, and put them up for year round enjoyment.
Instead of paying upwards of two dollars a pound for organic apples, most people with apple trees in their yards are more than willing to share if you just ask. In most yards, I see fruit all over the ground, rotting and attracting yellow-jackets. Consider gathering and using this fruit to enhance your health.
I’ve gone to cutting and freezing apples for my morning smoothies. In most instances, if you have a large freezer, stuffing zip-lock bags with frozen apple slices provides up to a year’s supply of good, organic fruit.
Malic acid has been shown to have benefit in many areas of physical function. It’s important in maintaining the integrity of the skin and in reduction of wrinkles. It’s used in many skin products for this purpose. Malic acid is produced in the body to some extent.
People with fibromyalgia have a hard time producing malic acid. Although studies supporting this are limited, two studies evaluated whether high doses of malic acid and magnesium helped reduce muscle pain and tenderness. One study was inconclusive, but suggested this combination may be beneficial over a long period of time.
In another study, people who took malic acid and magnesium reported significant improvement within 48 hours of starting treatment. This continued for the full eight weeks of the study. After eight weeks of full dosage, some participants were given a placebo instead. The placebo group reported reoccurrence of muscle pain within 48 hours.
Eating apples for a rich source of malic acid is a safe and healthy way to encourage better body function. It’s been shown that malic acid on the skin can be extremely beneficial in restoring the healthy natural texture of the skin. Apple Cider Vinegar, also rich in malic acid has been used to support skin health, and reduce wrinkles.
One famous doctor promoted apple fasts, eating nothing but apples and drinking water for three days, followed by two tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil before bed on the third day. This should be perfectly safe, but discuss it with your doctor (me) before doing it.
