The 2/24/2009 Wall Street Journal notes that only 11% of more than 2,700 recommendations approved by cardiologists for treating heart patients are supported by high quality scientific testing. This means 89% of what’s recommended for the health of your heart hasn’t been proven to be of benefit. Unfortunately these recommendations come with a steep price. Not only financially, but many carry some extremely scary side effects.
The cardiovascular seminar I attended in Denver last weekend was eye opening. I’ve studied much of the research done by early pioneers in nutrition through the the 20th century, but was unaware of studies which showed up in medical peer review articles of that same time. All of medicine was made aware, but this is where we see medical amnesia!
Medical amnesia is a condition where sound information has been tested, proven, and documented, but the medical establishment chooses to ignore it and go with the most recent information regardless of the lack of testing, or of the safety therein. The latest and greatest isn’t always the best for your health.
One driving factor in why these safe alternatives have been buried in literature of the past is because they are’t patentable and financially profitable. It all comes down to the almighty dollar. Since major medical universities are supported by the pharmaceutical industry, unless the doctor is dedicated to digging for the truth, they get whatever they’re fed by their professors. Even in my naturopathic education, much of this information must be sought out by the individual.
In an old Harvard magazine is found this statement: “Harvard researchers have found that rutin, a substance contained in that fruit (as well as in onions, buckwheat, and tea), has potent anticlotting powers that could help prevent heart attack and stroke. “Researchers discovered rutin’s antithrombotic property when they screened a set of 5,000 compounds for their ability to block the action of a key protein involved in the formation of vessel-clogging blood clots. When rutin rose to the top of the list, ‘It was very surprising, and we still don’t understand exactly why it is so potent,’” “Indeed, if scientists had tried to design a clot-preventing molecule, they could scarcely have created one more perfect than rutin.”
When we look at what pharmacy has to offer in drugs like aspirin, Warfarin, Xarelto, and Plavix, why has this natural element, found in food, been ignored in place of drugs which have horrendous side effects? All you have to do is watch television to see how dangerous these drugs are by commercials promoting legal action for those already injured by these drugs.
Rutin is a bioflavonoid found naturally in plant material and comprises part of the vitamin C complex. When I say complex, I mean it’s required for the normal function of vitamin C. Unfortunately we’ve been sold a bill of goods when it comes to vitamin C. Ascorbic acid is NOT vitamin C. It’s the protective envelope, protecting the functional components of vitamin C. If you’re buying high potency vitamin C, you’re getting ripped off, and not getting the functional rutin that protects veins, arteries, and capillaries. Many times rutin has been added, but it’s not in a functional complex that only nature can create.
Plants photosynthesize. They take energy from the sun, making oxygen from carbon dioxide. Oxygen is the plant’s waste material. The plant creates antioxidants to protect it’s structure from oxygen damage. We produce carbon dioxide as a waste product. We don’t want to protect our cells from oxygen. We run on it. Antioxidants to shut down oxygen utilization in our body is stupid. This is how we get our energy. We’ve been bamboozled by the industry which says we need to load up on antioxidants.
Plants rich in antioxidants have them to protect the nutritional structure. Eat the plant, not just the antioxidants. High potency supplements are frauds. Big numbers won’t keep you healthy. They create metabolic imbalance. I emphasize and use whole food nutritional supplements.
