I just had a conversation with a patient living a long distance from my office who’s dealing with an extreme pain issue. The desire to get something to them quickly to relieve the pain is sometimes a difficult task, and can be a moral and ethical nightmare. Many of the big hitters in the pain medication realm can’t just be phoned into a pharmacy. These require original hand written script.
The more we understand pain and how it operates can give us a better handle on how to relieve it, and correct the cause. Pain meds alone may help us cope with the present issue, but may leave us in a worse way if the cause is only masked, allowing for greater damage to the body.
When I was laying in a pool of my own blood 41 years ago with my intestines in my hands, the pain was unbearable. The morphine given me by the paramedics allowed me to keep breathing without the unbearable pain. This was an appropriate use of pain medication.
When dealing with pain, we have to include the health of nerves. These are the wires which transmit information to the brain about what’s happening in the tissues. If the nerves are cut, no information passes, and no pain. This is one method used with chronic pain. Severing the nerves to stop the discomfort. This can be a double edged sword though.
When the nerve itself is crushed or pinched as with spinal injuries, or inflamed as with shingles, the pain can be unbearable. Just ask any sufferer of shingles and they’ll testify to the extreme pain they’ve endured.
Anti-inflammatory drugs may reduce pain from inflammation. When they are given and no benefit, consider an issue of entrapment or crushing of the nerves. When the chiropractor reduces a subluxation and pain goes away, this was an entrapment not inflammation.
The outer membrane of nerves is composed of fats. This is why many cases of people using statin drugs for lowering cholesterol, experience an abundance of pain systemically. This can be the result of these sensitive sending components losing their protective coating and being irritated by normal motion. In many of these cases, no amount of anti-inflammatory medication makes any lasting difference, but stopping the drug brings relief.
With chronic inflammation anywhere in the body, your nerves are present to warn you of the problem. Our society has become one of ostriches, burying our heads in the pain relieving sand, hoping the problem will just go away. Our nerves are telling us, fix the problem.
Without nerves to alert us to danger, we would soon be like the Lepers of the Bible with open sores and fingers missing because they couldn’t feel. You could be on fire and not know it. Your nerves are a wonderful part of your entire body, created to signal action to muscles and information to the brain about what’s right or wrong with your body.
In maintaining a healthy nervous system, we need to remember some basics. Good fats are critical to proper nerve function. Hydrogenated fats (also known as trans-fats) will actually emulsify and destroy good fats, destroying the nerves. Over 50% of your brain weight is made up of fats. Destroy that and look out, dementia is on it’s way.
Many chemicals are damaging to the nerves. MSG as well as Nutrasweet (and many other synthetic sugars) are both known neurotoxins. Keep these out of your diet. Many of the bug sprays on the market are designed to damage the nervous system of insects. Your skin and nerves are both derived from the same embryonic tissue, so what goes on the skin affects the nerves. You don’t want pesticides on your skin.
Minerals are critical to the electrical impulses in your nerves. Like the battery in your car, both electrolytes and water are required to hold and transmit a charge. The best mineral sources will be a broad selection of vegetables added to your diet. And drink good water.
