Unfortunately, in the practice of medicine many have departed from the practice of health care. It’s become a practice of medicating disease instead of finding the cause and correcting the deficiencies.
When I talk of the controller of the heart, there are many areas which can be considered as having control over the heart. The human heart is not just the blood pump, but the spirit. When I see the disregard of the Hippocratic oath, I see where the heart of compassion is crippled. The pharmaceutical industry has created a revised Oath which waters down the intent of the original, allowing for the use of dangerous drugs and destruction of life.
Now to speak of the physical controller of the heart. Your thyroid gland is the primary pacemaker of every cell of the body. Your thyroid compliments the work of your adrenal glands in dealing with stress. Patients complaining of fatigue make up more than 20% of all patient visits in primary care.
When synthetic thyroid replacements are used like L-thyroxine, one of the side effects involves potassium loss, resulting in heart palpitations. This is a great example of drug induced malnutrition. Besides palpitations it’s not uncommon to see arrhythmias, congestive heart failure, hypertension, and angina. Unfortunately, the next thing dispensed is some kind of drug to cover these symptoms.
When looking at the top health concerns of our nation, correcting thyroid function can have a profound effect on many of these. These include sleep, weight, fatigue, mood instability, gastrointestinal problems, and hormone imbalances. Also, a major concern over cholesterol is addressed when the thyroid gland is healthy and cooperating with all your other organs.
The thyroid gland increases the rate and strength of the heartbeat, increases the rate of breathing, intake and consumption of oxygen, and increases the activity of mitochondria (the energy factories inside each cell). It increases blood flow and the body’s temperature.
Hormones affect the availability of free thyroid hormones and metabolism. The use of estrogen and birth control pills can effectively bind up thyroid hormones, resulting in lowered metabolism, fatigue, and weight gain. On the other hand, progesterone and androgens (testosterone and adrenal hormones) reduce thyroid binding hormones, altering the thyroid activity.
The body’s ability to make biologically active thyroid hormones is heavily dependent on the normal functions of the liver. Selenium is the mineral required for converting inactive T-4 to active T-3. The best source of selenium is in true vitamin E, (not the high potency alpha tocopherols found in your local drug store or health food store). This is found in naturally sourced oils that haven’t been denatured and hydrogenated. Toxic metals like lead and cadmium have been shown to interfere with the action of the selenium driven liver enzyme which makes active thyroid hormone T-3.
When evaluating thyroid function, most tests only look at the pituitary hormone TSH. This is so short sighted it misses the majority of thyroid issues. Most critical is to test bound and free T-4 and T-3 levels. In many cases it’s important to also check for autoimmune components which are quite common today. Check thyroid antibodies and TPO antibodies when you’re not seeing change.
The use of Synthroid (levothyroxine) only accomplishes a reduction of the push from the pituitary (TSH), while doing nothing to restore normal thyroid levels.
Another element seen but often not checked for is reverse T-3 (rT3). This interferes with the activity of the free T-3 activity by clogging up the receptor sites. It acts as a metabolic brake. This rT3 increases due to adrenal stress with overload of cortisol, and iron deficiency or abnormal utilization. When dealing with elevated rT3, checking for anemia is a start, but secondly is to reduce cortisol.
The herb Ashwaganda, also known as Withania, helps direct the hormone pathway away from cortisol and over to DHEA, which is the beginning of the reproductive hormone pathway. What does this often look like? Better energy, more stable hormones, reduction of ED, better sleep, and improved metabolism. Ashwaganda is a wonderful energizing herb.
Elevated cortisol leads to fatigue, weight gain, hypertension, and immune failure. The control of your heart, both physical and spiritual is hijacked under stress. Worry and fear impact your entire endocrine system. Using synthetics to correct it only covers up symptoms. Let’s fix the real problem.
