Kale, which has been listed as a super food made number 3 on the list this year. 92% of kale samples tested for two or more pesticide residues detected, and any one single sample could have up to 18 different residues. The most common contaminant found was Dacthal, also called DCPA, and has been shown to be potential carcinogen.
The list of the dirty dozen continues to have strawberries as the number one toxic food. That’s why I grow and freeze my own for my smoothies all year.
Here’s the list of the dirty dozen in order; (1) Strawberries, (2) Spinach, (3) Kale, (4) Nectarines, (5) Apples, (6) Grapes, (7) Peaches, (8) Cherries, (9) Pears, (10) Tomatoes, (11) Celery, (12) Potatoes. Although they’re not on the list, we’ve seen peppers in the past to have chemicals which damage the nervous system.
This long list shouldn’t cause you to avoid fruits and vegetables, but to seek out good clean sources of organic food instead of whatever is on the shelf at your grocery store. I just got off the phone with one of my patients who lives in Alaska. The option of organic doesn’t exist there. This is where one should consider the Clean list of foods. Those which made the clean 15 are the least likely to have pesticide residue. This doesn’t mean you can’t have foods with toxins, but you are more likely to get a cleaner source. I would still avoid the corn as it’s one of the most common GMO crops.
The clean list for 2019 includes the following; (1) Avocados, (2) Sweet Corn, (3) Pineapples, (4) Frozen Sweet Peas, (5) Onions, (6) Papaya, (7) Eggplant, (8) Asparagus, (9) Kiwi, (10) Cabbage, (11) Cauliflower, (12) Cantaloupe, (13) Broccoli, (14) Mushroom, (15) Honeydew melon.
The reason I emphasize eating clean is due to the impact of what’s known as endocrine disrupters. These chemicals found in foods treated with pesticides as well as herbicides interfere with cellular respiration and can set the stage for dysfunction throughout your entire hormone balance.
Trying to restore thyroid function in the presence of these chemicals in the body can result in failure. In fact, did you realize that just drinking tap water with chlorine and or fluoride can prevent your thyroid from functioning properly? These are considered halogens and are in the same column of the periodic table of elements as iodine. They can displace the iodine in you thyroid.
Bromine strongly displaces iodine, and is found throughout our environment to the degree it’s almost impossible to avoid. All flame retardants in clothes, furniture, carpets, and mattresses, to name only a few are loaded with bromine, which interferes with thyroid hormone levels.
Phthalates, used as plasticizers are substances added to plastics to increase their flexibility, transparency, durability, and longevity. They’re used primarily to soften polyvinyl chloride. We’re constantly exposed to these in colognes and perfumes as well. These disrupt thyroid function as well as other hormones in your body. When we use iodine to restore function of the thyroid, many of these toxins are released from the body, and can come out through the skin.
An article out of PubMed made the following statement: “Iodine allergy does not exist. The concept of iodine allergy should be abandoned since it may result in inappropriate measures such as drug, food, or environmental eviction.“ In other words, when iodine is consumed by a person with a load of these halogens in their system, it causes detoxification reactions of rashes, hives, and acne. When this is the case, proper cleansing of the system, while restoring appropriate nutrients is critical. To completely avoid iodine in the diet starves the thyroid, breasts, and prostate.
All these endocrine disrupters are found in the chemicals we eat in our foods, wear in our clothes or on our skin, drink in our water, and breathe. Avoidance of all of these is impossible, but we can assist the clearance with a an appropriate purification protocol, allowing the restoration of the function of our organs and improve how we live.
Many of these endocrine disrupters are responsible for the massive amounts of depression and anxiety seen in our population. Instead of adding dangerous psych drugs, consider cleaning up the system and adding in the appropriate nutrition required to maintain dynamic health. Don’t give in to the dirty dozen. Obtain healthy organic fruits and vegetables. Live long and Prosper!
