Although we may not agree on many issues, we’re still free to hold personal opinions, provided they don’t interfere with others. This may not resonate with some, but it’s what our great nation has been founded on.
With the turmoil recently seen in some major cities following the election, regardless of how you voted, this nation is still the greatest in the world. If not, why are so many wanting to live here.
When you allow stress and turmoil to rule your thoughts and emotions, you open the door to physical distress. Emotions directly affect the chemical balance of our bodies. Your emotions either improves your health, or destroys it.
The proverb which says a merry heart does good like a medicine, but a broken heart or spirit dries up the bones is very true. Your bones contain marrow, which makes blood. Your blood is your source of life. Poison the bones, and you poison your entire system.
If you’re still grieving over the outcome of the recent election, it’s not doing your physical body any good. It’s time to get it together and make some lemonade out of those lemons. This nation has gone back and forth between political parties for years, and yet it’s still the most livable place on earth. I don’t expect it to change that much.
If, on the other hand, you’re thrilled with the outcome, don’t persecute those who aren’t. Thanksgiving is a time to come together in a spirit of compassion and love, with a thankful heart. I have friends who volunteer at homeless shelters this time of year feeding the homeless. If you’re prosperous, a good way to show your thankfulness is to share your prosperity. (And that's one secret to prosperity. Givers prosper)
The traditional holiday turkey is loaded with the amino acid, tryptophan. This amino acid is famous for it’s relaxing qualities. It’s not unusual to see people sitting around watching the game in a tryptophan coma after dinner.
Tryptophan is what your body manufactures melatonin from, which aids sleep. Besides melatonin, serotonin, which acts as an antidepressant is another one of the neurotransmitters produced from tryptophan. Digesting that protein is important. If you take an acid blocker, you’re defeating digestion and limiting your absorption of tryptophan.
Eating all that protein requires adequate acid to break it down. Sugar consumption can block digestion of protein, and cause heartburn. Carbohydrates clear the stomach faster than protein. With that in mind, eating desert right after the main meal has the potential of setting up heartburn. I know this sounds a little in reverse, but try having your desert earlier in the day while spending time visiting so it can clear the stomach before putting the heavy foods in. You may find your stomach feels much better, and you avoid the brown-out and foggy head often seen after a big feast.
Try to not over stuff yourself. This can result in a hiatal hernia, a common cause of reflux esophagitis. this is where acid is pushed up your esophagus. Lying down after a large meal can also create a hiatal hernia as an over loaded stomach pushing against the cardiac sphincter can cause the stomach to protrude through the diaphragm. Make sure you have a couple hours after a large meal before going to bed.
So you see, coming together over a turkey dinner can help calm left over stress from disappointments, and get us on a new path. I have wonderful patients with different views. Some are thrilled and some are disappointed. Regardless, I love them all. Was I totally happy with the elections? I’ve yet to be. Between local, state, and federal, there’s always going to be areas which don’t go as I would like. Since I can’t change it, I just have to remember that I get glad in the same skin I get sad in. It’s up to me to choose to be disappointed or thankful. I choose thankful! Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
