Her father, who’s dealing with multiple disease conditions is taking a whole grocery bag of medications. When I see this kind of health assault, and not just in the elderly, I have to question just how many medications they’re taking strictly for the impact of a toxic home.
The issue of toxic building syndrome has been, and will continue to be an issue in areas where mold has an opportunity to thrive. In this particular case, the shag carpet is acting as a breeding ground for mold spores along with the closed up areas of his old trailer.
Many times, there’s been leaks in the building with insulation getting soaked and never fully drying out, promoting more fungal growth.
In many cases, toxic elements in the home are hidden. Insulation in the walls harboring black mold can be hidden from sight by fresh clean sheetrock or paneling, but the toxic elements are still seeping through the walls. The people who owned our house more than 25 years ago were smokers. Although we’ve fully cleaned the home and painted, on really hot days, the smell of the cigarette smoke begins to permeate the paint and walls. Getting full disclosure on a home before purchase can save not only dollars, but health.
Maintaining health is critical in any circumstance, but where you spend all your time needs to be a safe place. Both your place of work and your home needs to be safe for you. When we think of where you spend the most time, consider the importance of a bedroom that is free of toxins. Insure closets aren’t harboring moisture. Don’t put damp clothes in a corner and forget about them as this may initiate a moldy condition.
When our system becomes too alkaline, our bodies become fertile soil for these fungal forms. It’s been seen that multiple allergies to our environment are perpetuated when our pH is off, and acidifying the system can reduce and sometimes even eliminate allergies to these elements. Use of things like apple cider vinegar on a regular basis can assist in creating and maintaining a healthy pH. I use orthophosphoric acid to assist in reducing reactiveness in those individuals who’ve developed multiple allergies.
Taking medications to destroy the mold in our body without changing the environment is only a stop gap measure, often failing to give any long term help. In these cases, getting rid of the old carpet and putting down laminate or hardwood flooring can reduce the growth. Improving air flow, especially in the warmer summer months to dry the area out helps. Have fans move the air. Run the bathroom fan during and after showering to clear damp air from the house, and consider having your home inspected for mold in the walls.
Treating the body to clear molds is important as well. There are great alternatives to many of the chemical treatments relied on by mainstream medicine. The protocol put together by Dr Kerry Bone using herbal combinations can be extremely effective provided the environment within which the molds were contacted are addressed as well.
Just as we see fungal growth where there’s stagnation of air or even the kind of growth in stagnant water, stagnation of the blood and lack of increased respiratory activity can be responsible for maintaining the growth of these fungal forms in the body. Aerobic exercise is one of the best actions we can take to prevent growth of these organisms in the body.
In the case of the elderly, like that of my patient’s father, inactivity can be a real problem. Many are unstable on their feet and a fall is even more of a risk. In these, a recumbent stationary bike can be excellent therapy. In any area, improving diet and getting clean fresh air into the home are two areas you can’t go wrong with. If there is a systemic fungal issue, we have herbal solutions which work wonders with the other areas covered.
