The pharmacological effects of curcumin include: immune modulation, antioxidant properties, anti-aging, anti-diabetic, wound healing, anti-inflammatory, cardioprotective, neuroprotective, anti-metastatic, and others.
With all these amazing properties, it’s no wonder many have included turmeric as a health supplement. The one drawback is that curcumin has very poor bioavailability. Besides a short half life, and very poor uptake in the system, it’s rapidly metabolized and cleared from the body.
Since it’s poorly picked up and distributed to the cells as free or unchanged curcumin, many attempts have been made to improve its bioavailability. One method as been to combine it with black pepper. This has indeed helped, but still not the best.
One company has created an enhanced curcumin which they claim to increase curcumin delivery to the bloodstream ten fold. This is wonderful, but the combination which Dr Kerry Bone created with fenugreek has 25 fold blood curcumin delivery, and its ability to cross the blood brain barrier is 245 times more than un-enhanced turmeric. This is wonderful when considering the anti-inflammatory effects treating Alzheimer’s and dementia.
Because of its role in protecting tissue, it shows promise as primary support in autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Recent research in Germany established that curcumin can help maintain microglial cells, a first line of defense in the brain and spinal cord. Several studies have shown these cells are dysfunctional in ASD.
Besides the brain and nervous system dysfunction in ASD patients, the gastrointestinal problems they suffer can be addressed with curcumin. There’s the possibility of soothing the inflammatory issues seen in the intestines of these patients, and may help reduce the leaky gut issues of the ASD patient. This can reduce the allergy responses.
Curcumin improves microcirculation. This is very important for the diabetic patient and for those with elevated blood pressure and cardiovascular disease. Cold extremities is a problem suffered by many of my patients. Improving microcirculation for them is a real plus. Improving microcirculation to the eyes can stop degenerative changes seen in macular degeneration, and much of erectile dysfunction can be related to poor circulation.
Studies have shown reduction in physical and mental fatigue, as well as improved concentration. In obese patients, there was greatly improved arterial flexibility. This improved blood delivery and should imply improved metabolism for these patients.
Patients with enlarged prostates and decreased urine flow saw reduced urinary infections and improved urine flow. When coupled with other prostate supports, it promises to be more effective than many pharmaceutical or surgical procedures.
For those suffering gout, there’ve been lower levels of uric acid and lipids with improved liver ultrasounds in non alcoholic fatty liver disease.
Even tests using un-enhanced curcumin, showed reductions in anxiety and depression, improved beta cell performance in pre diabetic patients, and reduced insulin resistance.
Curcumin at 2 grams a day proved a successful replacement for proton pump inhibitors and H2 receptor antagonist drugs in patients with gastroesophageal reflux. These patients became asymptomatic and could enjoy again being able to digest their food.
As we enter the time of year with seasonal allergies, it’s been found that after two months of curcumin therapy, allergy sufferers had significantly reduced allergy symptoms.
With this all in mind, there’s no place where the use of a biologically enhanced turmeric wouldn’t benefit us all. The Turmeric Forte which Dr Bone created is available through us.
