Since the environment in your intestines dictates every aspect of your health, disturbing that natural balance can upset many of your systems. We’re aware of the gut being called the second brain, and this is quite evident when production of neurotransmitters like serotonin is interfered with at the gut level.
As I’ve emphasized in the past, your digestive system is the carburetor of the body. If natural function there is interfered with, nothing runs right. Yes, the foods you eat are instrumental in maintaining your health, but if they aren’t processed right, you will have trouble.
Present treatment of psoriasis involves turning off inflammatory cytokines in the skin. This is why the herb Boswellia can be used successfully in both inflammatory bowel disease and in psoriasis. Unfortunately, the antigen that stimulates these cytokines fails to be addressed.
Using oral antigen therapy like the DNA protomorphogens discussed by Dr Lee can turn off the attack, but without addressing the root, the condition will continue to be present. Just shutting down inflammatory cytokines without identifying the origin of the fire is what suppression therapy, used by most of modern medicine, is all about.
One primary cause is what’s been called “leaky gut”. This is where the wrong bacteria inhabits the gut, creating inflammation and leakage of endotoxins into the bloodstream. Psoriasis sufferers have increased gut permeability. Because of this, bacterial DNA originating in the gut leaks into the blood. When this DNA gets lose in the bloodstream, the immune system creates antibodies against it. To protect the rest of the body, the immune system creates these antibodies to protect against DNA which is never supposed to be lose in the bloodstream.
Enter bile acids, created in the liver. These are critical to the health and welfare of your whole system. These bile acids don’t only break up fat, but they act as detergents to split endotoxins into nontoxic fragments, eliminating the result of cytokine release. Remember, cytokines are what incite inflammation. This can mean inflammation anywhere in the body.
If the liver is compromised in it’s ability to produce bile, the protective action of bile salts in the intestinal tract will be lacking. When this happens, these endotoxins have the potential of creating a toxic load in the blood delivered back to the liver, resulting in the revolving door syndrome.
Treatment must begin by altering the bowel flora toward normal. This is where the weed, feed and seed protocol of clearing toxic bowel flora, restoring a healthy environment for good bacteria, and then planting the healthy bacteria is critical.
Next, there is need to break up endotoxins in the bowel using bile acids. This requires additional bile apart from what the liver is capable of providing.
The use of bioflavonoids to inhibit the absorption of the endotoxins can be accomplished through foods high in quercetin. At the same time, avoidance of alcohol and hot spices can prevent further damage to the delicate membranes of the gut.
Lastly, supporting and healing the liver is crucial. Milk Thistle contains Silymarin which is protective to the liver while there are other herbs specific to repair and restoration of liver function. I’ve always known that skin issues point to the liver. In this case, there’s a reciprocal activity between the liver and intestinal health. When one is challenged, it causes problems with the other. You can’t get complete restoration treating only one of these.
The inordinate use of antibiotics in our food supply as well as in disease control has created a revolving door between the liver and intestinal health. This can feed into so many allergies currently skyrocketing in our population.
