When people speak of treating the whole body, many times the aspect of the mind and it’s impact on systemic health gets left out of the equation. It’s quite obvious that the organ known as our brain is of critical importance in directing the many functions of our body.
Electrical conductivity through the massive network of nerves in our system plays a crucial role in maintaining proper function, both voluntarily and involuntarily. When interrupted, function is impaired.
To expound on this, I met an amazing man over the weekend who paints with his mouth. He’s been a quadriplegic for 38 years following a surfing accident where he snapped his neck and lost all function from his neck down. With electrical influence cut off from the brain to the rest of his body, thankfully there’s still function of critical organs of his body which are self regulating.
The heart has a closed circuit that’s self regulating from the area known as the natural pace-maker. This can be over-ridden by thoughts, but works independent of thoughts. The affect of adrenalin and caffeine are well documented in their impact on this natural pace-maker, over-stimulating heart activity.
In this person’s case, nerve pathways have been interrupted, yet the brain and thought processes are still intact, impacting chemical changes through his endocrine, or hormone system. His thoughts do ultimately determine the health of his body even though he has no conscious nerve control over his limbs.
With this we observe, how our thoughts generate function, or malfunction in our bodies. This being the case, we get the benefit of choosing our thoughts. What we dwell on has the ability to make us sick or make us well. The choice is ours. Unfortunately the thoughts many choose are predicated by previous negative experiences.
You’ve probably heard someone, or even yourself say, “that makes me so angry.” Actually, nothing or no one can make you feel anything. What you feel is your choice. With the state of the present political climate, there’s massive polarization, party against party. If you dwell on it, it has the potential of fully upsetting your biochemistry. If this is the case, you come out the loser regardless of the election outcome.
It was inspirational to see this man painting with his mouth at the NW Art andAir festival. The process was slow but deliberate, and the results were nothing short of amazing. He’s an inspirational speaker, and when he speaks to high school kids, He says, “I’m paralyzed from the neck down. What’s your excuse, are you paralyzed from the neck up?”
If you believe an airplane can safely carry you from one place to another, you don’t hesitate to get on it. On the contrary, if you don’t believe it can accomplish this task safely, I doubt you will board that plane. Thoughts, both conscious and unconscious impact actions, both intended as well as un-intended. They can ultimately keep you from living!
Your story will either make you or break you. What you continually tell yourself and others over time, will ultimately define your life. I’ve had patients come to me for the first time and say something like this, “I’ve been to 25 doctors and none of them have been able to help me, let’s see what you can do.” When they say this, I feel like referring them to the lottery, because with that attitude, they have already marked me off as another failure. When this happens, regardless of how spot on the treatment is, they may see temporary improvement, only to see the old issues return. Their mind will make the needed adjustments to make the body conform to their beliefs.
Your body will attempt to find equilibrium with your thought life. Anything short of drugging the system will fail to have benefit without cooperation of your mind. Take time to inventory your thoughts. Do they line up with health and success or sickness and failure?
